San Diego — Every war era has its pinups, and PETA hopes that its new sexy billboard featuring Playboy Playmate of the Year Kimberley Hefner will rouse a passion for veggie fare among military personnel. This week, PETA erected its bold ad featuring a scantily clad Hefner dressed in an "Uncle Sam" outfit and declaring, "I Want YOU … to Go Vegetarian," on Harbor Drive, just 300 feet north of Eighth Street, facing south.
The "Uncle Sam" ad campaign is part of PETA’s gentler, upbeat approach following the terrorist attacks on September 11—and busy Naval Station San Diego is the perfect setting for the eyebrow-raising billboard. The base is one of the largest U.S. military installations in the world, homeport to approximately 60 Navy ships, homebase to 50 separate commands, and the workplace of approximately 48,000 military and civilian personnel.
Vegetarianism is catching on everywhere, including the armed services. "There is a growing roster of vegetarians in the military, just as there is in the rest of society," says Air Force Captain Mike Daniel, who loves the veggie burgers served on the Los Angeles Air Force Base.
