They may not have made metro residents into vegetarians, but Kristie Phelps and Jennifer Knox certainly made them look twice.
The two activists from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals were on the Halifax waterfront yesterday, sporting leafy green bikinis and high heels.
They handed out faux buffalo wings made of soy products, hoping their attire and the tasty fare would make people think about going vegetarian.
“It’s just a fun way to bring attention to the serious suffering of animals in factories and farms,” said Phelps, who’s from Norfolk, Va.
She went vegetarian six years ago, prompted by concerns about how animals are treated on farms and in slaughterhouses.
She’s now vegan, meaning she doesn’t eat cheese, eggs or other animal products.
As a vegetarian, she said, she’s tried more varieties of food than she would have when she ate meat.
She and Knox were in Maine last week to protest at a lobster festival, and will be in Saint John, N.B., today. They’ve journeyed as far as Spain, Amsterdam and Germany, and sported their leaves even in the cold.
“We’d rather be out here in pig costumes,” Phelps joked, but said it’s worth the stares to draw attention to their cause.
And no, the lettuce wasn’t real.
“We travel so much that it would wilt,” Phelps said.
